Charles William Van Volkenburg
Chuck was born and lived in Tacoma all of his life, belonging to and becoming a Bosun in the Sea Scouts during his teenage years. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during the Korean War, and was married to Helen Sandra Klinkert from 1958 until November 23, 2011, when he passed away. He and his wife purchased the Port/Pacific Yacht Basin on Slip 3 in the industrial area in the 1960s. At one time, this marina was the largest privately-owned marina in the city and hosted the first "In-the-Water Boat Show" in Tacoma, provided a Search and Rescue craft, won first place with an authentic Chinese junk in the marine Daffodil Parade, and participated in the Puyallup River Races. Forced from the land in 1979, Chuck built a small store on East 11th Street and operated it until 2003. Even retired, he continued to work on outboards as Chuck's Mobile Service / Force & Chrysler Outboard Repair. He was a member of the Totem Outboard Association, BPOE 174, and Immanuel Presbyterian Church. He was an avid bowler, belonging to many leagues throughout the years, and enjoyed racing scale vehicles. All who knew Chuck learned of his skill in the crafting and repairing of just about anything. He was known for his inventiveness and his willingness to help others, and was a quiet, gentle soul. He leaves behind his wife Helen, sons David (Rita), Philip, and Mark (Sharon), and four granddaughters, Krystle, Charlene, Karolyn, and Stephanie. He is also survived by a sister, Nelda (Norman Behling), and two brothers, Donald (Marie) and Obed. At his request, there will be no services. Do not sit at my grave and cry I am not there; I did not die.
