Carlos YapU.S. Army RetiredMay 15, 1922 Â- Sept. 21, 2004Carlos Yap passed away peacefully in the presence of his wife of 49 years, Rose, on Sept. 21, 2004. Born in Pototan, Iloilo, Philippines, he enlisted with one of his younger brothers in 1941 as a Philippine Scout with the 12th Quartermaster which was attached to the U. S. Army Â"BÂ" Co. 91st Coast Artillery in Corregidor. He was captured by the Japanese in 1942 and made a POW in the same camp where his brother had dies a month earlier. After his release he became a very proud and highly decorated Sergeant in the U.S. Army. He retired honorably in 1961, and afterward he and Rose settled permanently in Tacoma. Carlos was beloved by all who met and knew him. He gracious, tender, loving, spirit, incredible generosity and infectious laughter will be greatly missed. He always loved and lived life to the fullest. A very talented man, in his youth he was extremely athletic, creative, inventive, musical and adventurous. In his later years, Carlos mostly enjoyed playing the harmonica and spending as much time as he could with friends, and family, especially his grandchildren. He found joy in life every day and was likely unaware of his quietly profound and inspiring effect on the lives he touched. He accomplished many great things in life, but his sweet humility was unparalleled. Carlos was a true modern day hero whose strength of character, integrity, thoughtfulness and unbelievable humility would be hard to match. Carlos is survived by his wife, 4 children, 14 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and numerous families who will miss him deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents Jose and Doinisia, and 7 of his 12 siblings. A viewing will be held on Friday, September 24, 2004 from 1-9PM and again on Sat. Sept. 25, 2004 from 8-2:30PM. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2004 at 4:00PM in the Mt. View Aspen Chapel, Celebration of Life Center, with a reception immediately following the burial.
