Byron was born in St. John Kansas to Emmett and Cleo Stauffer where he spent his younger years before his family moved to Tacoma WA. He was the fifth of six children: Betty Funk Hilleren, Jean Funk Keller, Gary Stauffer, Sharon St Read Obituary
Byron was a great swimmer. At the 1960 WA state championships at Hec Edmundson Pool at the U, he was the defending champion in the 50 yard freestyle. I thought I had a chance. He beat me by 1/10th of a second. Great guy!
