There are so many memories when I think back on times shared with my uncle Bryan. He gave me a place to stay when I first got Washington. There were no questions, he said, just come on up, we'll make it work. With that saiid, he welcomed me into his home.
There were countless hours in his shop where we worked on an old car of mine or his truck while we shared stories, and he gladly gave of his time while we turned wrenches on those old vehicles. I cherish that time now as look back, because it was my first chance for me to really get to know my uncle closely.
In his kitchen he inspired my love for cooking that I currently enjoy today. There were so many good meals, and oh how he loved to cook. He really enjoyed himself in the kitchen. He was a very happy chef, and it was fun to watch him cook.
He once asked me to come help him cook at a Chili cook off. His greatest desire there was not so much to win the cook off but what he really wanted was to beat the local restaurant at their own game. That was a ton of fun cooking in that tiny booth with my uncle and his chili recipe. The interaction with the crowd was great, and they loved his chili! He did win the peoples choice trophy that day, and in so doing, he did beat the local restaurant at their own game.
He also taught me the art and appreciation of sipping and enjoying a good Scotch. (Umm, Thanks Bryan!) There's so many of those memories, how do you pick the ones to write about?
Bryan was there for his family too. I remember a road trip down to Sacramento he and I went on. We went down to get my mom/his sister when times there got rough. When the call came, without question Bryan was ready to go help. That's just who he was. We took his truck and a borrowed flat bed trailer and hit the road. To Sacramento and back in 3 days, and load an entire house for the trip back to Washington on day 2, boy that was tough. But that's just who he was. It got done.
Bryan, the memories I have of you, of the times and things we did together, will last me as long as the time I have left here on the rock. Then I'll see you again. Save a spot for me on the fishing boat ok.
