Billie Scott Cunningham's Obituary
Billie Scott Cunningham
8/9/1926 - 12/2/2009
Born in Doerun, Georgia, Bill joined the Navy after Moultrie High School. Proud to serve aboard the minesweeper TAKAELMA as a Boatswain Mate 2nd Class during WWII. Bill relocated to Tacoma, WA, marrying Billie L. Stairs in 1950. He served as Elder for Trinity and Manitou Presbyterian Churches and was active in "The National Association of Fleet Tug Sailors." Bill worked for Burlington Northern Railroad, painted the Narrows Bridge towers, and retired from the Bremerton Naval Shipyard as an Electrician Foreman. Bill was always there for his kids and grandkids, whether it be the making of doll chairs, attending sporting events, or on one occasion standing in line to buy a Cabbage Patch Doll. Vacations meant trips to Georgia and Florida to visit family and friends. His electrical skills were put to use at local churches and building homes for Habitat for Humanity. Devoted to the South Tacoma Neighborhood council, Bill saw success with the "Save Wapato Hills" project and the "Skip and Laura Vaughn Park." Bill enjoyed reading, carpentry, and gardening. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma took his life but not his spirit. Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years, Billie, three children, Robert Cunningham (Janis), Janice TobinE(Pat), and Luann Cunningham, and three grandchildren, Christina, Scott, and Shawn. Services will be held at 1:00 PMEDecember 19, 2009 in the Mountain View Aspen Chapel, reception following. The family thanks the staff at Wynwood of Allenmore and the Multicare-Good Samaritan Hospice for their considerate and professional care. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
