Betty Jean Cook's Obituary
Betty Jean Cook, beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away September 8, 2010 at the age of 88. One of six children born in Olympia, WA to William and Mabel Carty, Betty lived most of her life in the Pacific NW, a place she referred to as 'God's Country'. Betty grew up in Tacoma, graduated from Lincoln High School, and, at the onset of World War II, joined the Navy, serving her country honorably as a Wave for the remainder of the war. In 1948, after a brief courtship, Betty married the love of her life, Henry (Heinie) Cook. They spent 57 happy years as husband and wife and, prior to Heinie's death in 2005, enjoyed life traveling many years as snowbirds between Lake St. Clair, WA, and Arizona. Betty worked 50+ years as an accountant. She was the Office Manager for the Tacoma Labor Advocate, and retired from the State of Washington - Department of Retirement Systems in the mid-1980s. A kind and generous woman, Betty was dearly loved by her family and friends. She was all a child could ever want as a mother to Rhonda (Dave Bell) and Denise (John Casseday), a grandmother to Kyle (Linda), Peter and Casey (Rodney Joubert), Devyn, Dayna, David (Ingrid) and Jeff, and a great-grandmother (better known as GG) to Ryan, Trevor, Ashley, Emery, Madison and Ella. Mom loved bowling, cards, black licorice, teddy bears, casinos, and chocolate. Hot toddies before bedtime brought a smile to her face. Those closest to her know of her keen sense of humor and how tickled she was after hearing a good joke. We give special thanks to the wonderful people at Patriot's Landing - Dupont, Weatherly Inn Memory Care - Kent, and Franciscan Hospice - Tacoma. Donations to the Alzheimer's Association or your favorite charity may be made in Mom's memory. A celebration of her life for friends and family will be held at a later date. You cannot replace people like Betty Cook; you can only remember them. Just as her husband before her, she will be missed by all she leaves behind.
