Beth I Chipman's Obituary
Beth Ingalls Chipman
Beth Ingalls Chipman, age 89, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, July 8, 2016 after complications from a long-term heart condition. Beth was born in Murray, Utah, on October 11, 1926 and moved to Tacoma in 1936. She attended Bryant Elementary and Jason Lee Jr. High, and then graduated from Stadium High School. Beth had four brothers, William Vernet Ingalls, Irvin Ingalls, Ralph Ingalls, and Dale Ingalls, all of whom preceded her in death.
Near the end of World War II, Beth met and married a dashing young sailor, Carl Chipman, after meeting him when his ship docked in Tacoma. Carl and Beth celebrated 70 years of marriage in May. They lived nearly their entire married life in the Tacoma area, including the past 50 years in their home in University Place.
Beth provided office services and management for Drs. Bryce Betteridge, Frederick Paine, and Marse McNaughton for 32 years.
Beth loved her Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, and so served in many capacities in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her family were pioneer members of her church in the Tacoma area in the 1940s. In connection with their church service, she and Carl spent ten years helping Asian refugees and immigrants. She enjoyed singing in the church choir and passed along her love of music to all of her children. She also loved sports and attended all of her children’s sporting events. Beth enjoyed watching her favorite sports teams, including the Seattle Mariners and the BYU Cougars football and volleyball teams.
Beth was an avid genealogist, and spent many years researching her family history. She created a wall size pedigree chart going back centuries. She also loved to write poetry, especially about her family and her life.
Beth crocheted, knitted, and quilted throughout her life, gifting hundreds of beautiful hand-crafted items to family and others through the years. Even as her health declined in the last few years, she crocheted hats as gifts for newborn babies and cancer patients, and soft balls for children’s nurseries and churches.
She is survived by her husband, Carl, and by six children, Veraun Chipman of Gresham, OR, Linda Cates of Richland, WA, Alan Chipman of Morgan Hill, CA, Karen Lystad of McCleary, WA, Glen Chipman of Goldendale, WA, and June Garlitz of Bristow, VA. Beth was a beloved grandmother to 31 and great grandmother to 53. Her family will miss her greatly, but we are happy that she is now without pain and has joined her mother, grandparents, aunts, brothers and many other loved family members as a daughter of God who served others with love throughout her life.
Viewing will be this Friday, 7/15/2016 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Mountain View Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Saturday, 7/16/2016 at 11 a.m. at the West Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 4219 Beckonridge Drive W., University Place with viewing at 10 a.m.
