Bertha Ida Rice's Obituary
Bertha Ida Rice, 101, of Tacoma, passed away December 10, 2005. She was born October 21, 1904 in Hillyard, WA to Jared and Ida Herdlick, both immigrants (he from Bohemia and she from Germany).Her early years were spent in the upper regions of the Columbia River near Pleasant Valley, where she rode a horse to school. She met her husband Enos Rice while they attended the U of W and were married in 1925. Together they raised two sons.She worked for the Seattle School District from 1943 to 1971. At Franklin High School, she worked in the attendance office. In 1948, she became secretary to Principal Walter Reseburg and other principals until her retirement in 1971.She enjoyed gardening, canning fruits and vegetables from her 2 acre home site. She played the piano and participated in several choral groups. Most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends. In 1988, her husband of 63 years preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons Gary Rice (June) of Alamo, CA and Ronald Rice (Linda) of Bremerton, WA, 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Mt. View Memorial Park.
