Toward the end of my dad's life I got to spend almost a week with him. We had our daily routine and meals. He was always interested in people and their stories, so I thought I wonder if he would like to see some posts on Instagram, that I really enjoyed.
We sat down at the table with my computer and the first video was of Jordan Poyer, from Astoria, Oregon who plays for the Buffalo Bills. I said dad isn't he so cool, he said, he is a pro. The next video was of the President of Finland, speaking at the Nordic Museum in Seattle. My dad said, he is smart. The next video was a cooking video of Lorianasheacooks, he said, she is smooth. I thought to myself, dad, you are smart, smooth and you are a pro.

We are so very saddened to hear of Arts passing. We have known Art and the family for many years and have been only blessed by his life. He made my mama happy and they shared a lot of fun times together. Art was there when both of my kids were born and has been Papa Art to them all their lives. He always had a word to share, could talk to anybody and made you feel like he knew you all your life. He was a very special person to us. We will miss hanging outside having a drink and shooting the breeze with you Art. You were one in a million. We miss you now, but look forward to seeing you soon.

Gramps. I’m going to miss seeing your smile first thing when I would walk through the door to go visit you. Our grandfather was the kind of guy everyone wanted to be around. He was the kind of guy that you felt better after talking to. He taught me how to be kind, caring, patient and humble. One of my favorite memories of my grandpa was him teaching me how to shoot hoops in his shop in Raymond one summer. I was too small to shoot a full sized basketball so he taught me how to shoot with a soccer ball. He was so consistent on teaching me the proper technique. He taught us all the love for the UW Huskies. We would talk sports for hours when we were together. Gramps and I could talk about anything, he loved my humor and he was so happy that I met my girlfriend, Jessica Armstrong and started a family with her. Getting to see him hold Lyla Harper his great granddaughter, was one of the greatest experiences I could have ever asked for and I’m so glad he got to experience that as well. We all love you and always will! Your story will always be remembered and we will always carry on your traditions and your love for the Huskies. Your legacy will live forever!
Here is the last text I sent my Grandpa at 7:47 AM on Mon, June 12th, the day he passed. I don’t think he ever got to read it or have it read to him so I will post it here.
Good morning gramps! Love you so much! You built quite the family. I will always carry on our legacy and what you’ve taught me. Your story will always be remembered and looked up to.
My grandfather was my compass. I’ve always charted my course with his guiding influence. Our family loves talking. My grandpa and I would talk about everything when we had time together – history, traveling, sports, family history, politics, the old days, the old-old days, my life in Seattle. If my grandpa had something he needed to tell me or I needed to hear, he would say it plainly and clearly – and I always heard him. I grew up in the same town as him, a very special experience. He was at all of my games and every other major event. He sat at the top of the bleachers with my parents and came down on the court after all my varsity games. He brought clam dip and ruffles chips to all family gatherings as kids and made chocolate chip cookies for us every Christmas. We used to watch his boat come up the Willapa River from our house and meet him down at the docks with his salmon catch. I miss him so much, I am so grateful he left us with an abundance of memories and lived his life to the fullest. Love you grandpa from the bottom of my heart.
