Archie Blackwell Jr.'s Obituary
Archie Blackwell, born January 21, 1948, in Galveston, Texas, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2025, in Lakewood, Washington, just one day shy of his 77th birthday. A man of honor, love, and wisdom, he lived a full and impactful life, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
Archie was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, serving 21 dedicated years in radar maintenance from 1972 to 1993. His career took him across the globe, but his heart found its home at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines, where he not only served his country but also met the love of his life, Lorna Blackwell. Married for over 38 years, they built a life together filled with love, adventure, and family. His numerous military accolades, including the Air Force Overseas Short Tour Ribbon with six devices, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with two devices, Humanitarian Service Medal, and Air Force Good Conduct Medal with three devices, stand as a testament to his commitment and service.
After retiring from the Air Force, Archie furthered his education at Clover Park Technical College, earning a degree in Consumer Electronics. A lifelong learner and spiritual man, he embraced Buddhism and lived by the words of the poem Desiderata, particularly: “Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.” These words reflect his values of hard work, empathy, and deep thought.
Archie was also deeply committed to social justice. As a member of the Black Panther Party and the Civil Rights Movement, he worked to promote equality, believing that everyone deserved to be treated with love, dignity, and respect. His passion for fairness and unity shaped the way he lived and inspired others.
A man of many interests, Archie loved music, performing as a basso profundo in the 1960s with the group The Fidelities and later as a DJ in the 1970s, curating a vast music collection. He was a passionate Dallas Cowboys fan, an advocate for education, a lover of animals (especially his beloved dogs), and an admirer of martial arts. Archie also had a deep love for gardening, especially growing vegetables, which brought him peace and joy. He enjoyed watching sports, volunteering in his community, and encouraging others to follow their dreams. His mantra, “Fathers make babies, dads take care of babies,” exemplified his dedication to his role as a father to his seven children, a grandfather to ten, and a great-grandfather to three.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Hallie Cue Butler, and three of his siblings. He is survived by his devoted wife, Lorna, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his brother, David Jerome Jackson. His family and countless friends will forever cherish his legacy, wisdom, humor, and the joy he brought into their lives.
A celebration of Archie Blackwell’s remarkable life will be held at a future date in his hometown of Galveston, Texas. Family, friends, and loved ones will come together to honor his legacy, share cherished memories, and celebrate the profound impact he had on all who knew him. Details will be shared at a later time.
As the Desiderata reminds us: “Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.” Archie exemplified these ideals, showing us the power of perseverance, compassion, and a thoughtful heart.”
