She was raised and went school in Houston, TX, where she met and married Walter Joseph Brown in the Spring of 1942. However, sadly, she became a military widow in 1961 at the tender age of 33. She enjoyed entertaining, interior design; she had a flair for fashion, and she LOVED her hats. The highlight of her year was to host the Festival of Tables at Bethlehem. She was employed by the federal government for over 30 years; thereafter, she moved on to work for Tacoma School District for another 20 years. She was involved in Colored Women’s Club and a variety of ministries at Bethlehem Baptist Church to include the Gospel Chorus, the Women’s Ministry, the Culinary Ministry, and the Seniors Ministry, where she lead the Senior Luncheons.
One of her greatest honors was being the oldest living member of Bethlehem, having been recognized as a “Mother” of the Church and one of the “Ninety & Nifty” just last year. A.P. is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Walter Joseph Brown, her daughter, Devonia “Cookie” Smith, her sisters, Helen Tally, Jathree Watkins, Irma Jean Payne, Queen Esther, Irene, Coreen, Doreen Jacobs, and three other sisters, her brothers, Earnest, Buddy, and Isom Jacobs her parents, as well as her mother- and father-in-law, Devonia Hawkins and Eddie King Hawkins. She is survived by her daughter, JoAnne Solitaire, her granddaughter, Nyla Moore-McCreary, her great-grandson, Joseph Jackson, III, and a host of nieces and nephews, extended family, loved ones and friends.
