Anita E. Griggs' Obituary
Anita Griggs, a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and cherished friend, passed away on September 15, 2025, in Tacoma, Washington, just days before her 85th birthday.
Born in Germany on September 23, 1940, Anita was the second of three children born to Emil and Maria Armbruster. She brought grace, strength, and creativity into every chapter of her life.
Anita was married to George Griggs, with whom she shared a loving marriage and five children—three sons and two daughters. After George’s passing in 1977, Anita courageously raised her children on her own, embodying resilience and unconditional love. She earned a certificate in fashion design and became an accomplished seamstress, known for her meticulous workmanship and exceptional quality.
Throughout her career, Anita contributed her talents to European Elegance Curtain Shop, Bratwear, Patagonia, and BRB. She lovingly made a lot of her grand children’s clothing and crafted beautiful coats for friends, family, and orphans at Western State Hospital. Her creativity extended beyond sewing—she enjoyed knitting, gardening, caring for houseplants, bowling, cooking, and watching classic TV shows. Her German Potato Salad was a favorite among all who knew her.
Anita’s Catholic faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was a faithful member of Pope St. John XXIII Parish in Tacoma. She was also a longtime member of the South Tacoma Eagles, where she enjoyed fellowship and community.
Above all, her greatest joy came from her family—her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her beloved dogs: Rusty, Snicker, Buzz, Sissy, and Cowboy. She also found companionship and happiness with her partner Leonard Tunnel, who preceded her in death in 2011.
Anita is survived by her children: Helen (Gary) Stophel, Thomas (Christina) Griggs, Arnold (Tami) Griggs, Robert (Lisa) Griggs, and Sylvia Griggs; grandchildren: Ashley (Casey) Kirk, Britany (Kenny) Harper, Brandon Christiansen, Cameron Christensen, Erik Corwin and Alexa Mason; and great-grandchildren: Kennedy Kirk, Nixon Kirk, Russel Harper, Elijah Harper, and Illiana McLees.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Griggs, and her partner, Leonard Tunnel.
Anita’s legacy of love, strength, and creativity will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
