I was heart broken when I heard on May 19, 2022, that Dr. Andrew Tsoi had passed away on May 15, 2021. Dr. Tsoi had a tremendous impact on my professional career. He lived believing that if you had positive thoughts your life would be positive. I worked for Dr. Tsoi for several years at the Pacific General Medical Clinic and I was always impressed with his organizational abilities. From a physician perspective it was a pleasure to work at his clinics because he leveraged the physicians time to the maximum. It was as easy for me to see a patient who had a simple problem as it was for me to see a patient who had a difficult laceration to repair. The reason for this was that his nursing staff were so well trained that there was no need to tell them what to do. They already knew what was needed and they did it with maximum efficiency. When we were busy, I could easily see 60 patients per day because there was no time wasted communicating with the nurses as to what they should do next. His clinics ran like clockwork. After I left Dr. Tsoi’s General Medical Clinics I found that it took twice as much work to see half as many patients. The reason for this was that every other clinic or emergency department was disorganized. The emergency department is often chaotic, but it does not have to be that way. I spent the next 25 years working in disorganized emergency departments where I was continuously frustrated with lack of organization and lack of leadership. I tried to bring some order and efficiency to the emergency departments where I worked but I was met with intense resistance. I have spoken to other physicians who have worked for Dr. Tsoi and they express the same frustration when they tried to organize emergency departments at their hospitals.
It is with great sorry that I write this post. If there are any physicians, nurses or front office people who read this, I hope you will contact me.
