Beloved and surrounded by his family, Amman Williams, 87, passed away on August 22, 2021 at Madigan Army Medical Center near Tacoma, Washington.
Born in Aiken, South Carolina, Amman (also known as “Brother”) was the oldest of 3 children. He spent his formative years growing up in Jamaica, Queens New York. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army to embrace new opportunities and skills. While stationed in Tokyo in 1955, he met Kazuko, a beautiful young lady who stole his heart, later marrying in 1958. From there, Amman and Kazuko made their “home” where-ever the Army would send them. His career allowed him to travel the world with his wife and his 3 young children. Known only to few, Amman was awarded the Bronze Star Medal in 1969 and was honored throughout his distinguished military career. His traveled locations included Aiken, South Carolina; Jamaica, New York; Fort Dix, New Jersey; Brentwood, Pennsylvania; Fukuoka, Japan; Misawa, Japan; Taijon Korea; Tokyo, Japan; Camp Drake, Japan; Brooklyn, New York; Crailsheim, Germany; Fort Lewis, Washington; Fort Bliss, Texas; Anh Khe, Vietnam; Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Monterey, California; Camp Kuea, Okinawa; Fort Ord, California; Vicenza, Italy; Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana; and Steilacoom, Washington.
After 27 dedicated years, SFC Amman Williams retired in 1980 to Steilacoom, near JBLM, formerly known as Ft. Lewis. He then devoted himself to a second career, 20 years of public service with the King County Housing Authority, where he was an outstanding Public Housing Manager.
Amman had several great passions in life. Five days a week, he could be found shooting pool/billiards at the local Tacoma Elks Lodge #174 with many buddies. He was a skilled player and enjoyed participating in local tournaments. He was known for his friendly and witty sense of humor. Amman also loved his East Coast family. He maintained strong family bonds within the Williams Family Circle and enjoyed annual family reunions and studying genealogy. He deeply loved his grandchildren, traveling, learning languages, and Costco.
He will be remembered as a very special man, loving and kind-hearted, always willing to help others, had a generous spirit, and was strongly self-reliant. He was a faithful husband, father, ‘brother’, uncle, cousin, friend, and the BEST grandpa. He is preceded in death by his mother Louise, father James, sister Louise Shirley and his brother Ralph. He is survived by his 3 children, daughter Tammi (Toru) Garofalo, daughter Loujanna (Jeffrey) Rohrer, son Amman Williams, 6 grandchildren; Isabelle, Emmy, Luke, Raquel, Braylon, Kannon, sister-in-law Yoshiko (John) Boe, and sister-in-law Laura (Ralph) Williams.
Our family is grateful for the personal and loving care Madigan's ER and ICU team provided during his final days. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts.
