Allert Berger's Obituary
Allert Edwin Berger, loving husband, father, and grand-father, went to be with the Lord on October 15, 2012, at the age of 90. Allert was born on February 13, 1922 in Cut Bank, Montana, the son of Edwin and Ella Berger and the third born of their 5 children.
He graduated from Cut Bank High School in 1939. Shortly thereafter Allert moved to Tacoma, Washington.
In 1942 he joined the Merchant Marines, and served our country during World War II in the Pacific and Atlantic Theaters.
In 1944 when he was set up on a blind date by Ellen's sister, Allert met Ellen Ann Schmechel. They were married on April 5, 1945, and settled in Tacoma. Shortly after the war ended, Allert started A.E. Berger Construction which he ran successfully for 61 years until his retirement in 2006. During his career, he served on the Pierce County Planning Commission as well as maintaining his long-standing membership in the Tacoma Home Builders Association where he served as President in 1961.
Allert loved the outdoors including fishing, small game hunting, gardening, and during his retirement years, golfing with his friends of many years.
He faithfully attended Parkland Lutheran Church where he served as a member of the congregation for 53 years. He was periodically a member of the church board, served as an Elder, and was involved in many phases of the reconstruction of the sanctuary. Whether someone had a need at their house or at the church, Allert was always the "go to" guy to get it done.
Allert is survived by his wife, Ellen, along with his daughter and her husband: Dr. Thomas and Faye Jonez of Gig Harbor, WA, and his granddaughter Aneliese Jonez, his brother Vernon Berger of Cut Bank, Montana, and his sister Annette Harris of Spokane, Washington, and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was most recently a resident of Harbor Place at Cottesmore in Gig Harbor, Washington.
