Aline O. McCarthy's Obituary
Aline Olive McCarthy, beloved mother, devoted wife, and a woman of charitable works, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2018, at the age of 91.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 4, at First Christian Church, 701 Franklin St. SE, in Olympia.
Aline was born in Providence, Rhode Island, November 29, 1926, to Violet R. and Joseph D. LaBelle, and spent her childhood in Rhode Island. She was a department store sales clerk until she married Robert (Bob) C. McCarthy, Jr., an Air Force sergeant, in 1953. They lived in Rhode Island, Germany, Texas, and New York before Bob was stationed at McChord Air Force Base in 1961. They fell in love with Washington State and never left. Aline was a resident of Pierce County until she moved to Thurston County in 2014.
Aline was a polite, refined lady and a life-long avid reader. She was a charter member of Lakewood Emblem Club 441, where she volunteered untold hours supporting services for veterans and children for more than 40 years. She was also active in AREWS (Association of Retired Enlisted Wives). After her husband’s death in 1997, Aline ran a gift basket business and joined the Widows Club. She also traveled to many destinations in the USA.
Above all, Aline was a devoted mother. She was always there, caring for her children when they were young, eager to hear from and see them as adults, and took pleasure in her role as grandma. She offered a listening ear, gave the just-right greeting card, loved birthdays and Christmas, and baked yummy treats. Words cannot express how much her children loved her for the woman and extraordinary mother she was.
Aline is survived by her three children, Cheryl Moore (Mike), Steven McCarthy, and Donna Knapp (Dave); her sister, Gloria LaBelle; and five grandchildren—Devon, Shannon, and Oliver Knapp, Michael Moore, and Nicole Beckwith.
Aline’s children wish to thank their aunt, Gloria, for the compassionate and loving support she gave Aline in her final years.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Disabled Veterans of America or Wounded Warrior Project.
