Alene "Pat" Farr's Obituary
Alene (Pat) Farr, a lady of old Virginia, crossed over to join her beloved husband, Steve, on December 16, 2015. Born in Fincastle, Virginia, Pat became a registered nurse in 1943. She soon joined the Army Nurse Corps to support the war effort. Her WWII experience was unique. She served aboard military troop ships, including the Queen Mary, in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and the Pacific. Pat took care of troops being transported to combat zones and on the return voyages she tended the wounded being brought home. At the end of her sea voyages she had traveled over 200,000 miles.
Pat had met Steve, also an Army officer in 1944. However their duties kept them in different parts of the world during the war and for several years afterward. Finally they were able to be married in San Diego in 1948. Shortly thereafter she resigned from the Army to be with Steve. He remained on active duty as a career officer in many exciting locations until his retirement at Ft. Lewis WA in 1963.
They settled in Lakewood, WA and were active in the community. Pat continued her nursing career at the old Lakewood General Hospital until her retirement in 1982. Steve, obtained his Masters degree at PLU and then began a 24 year career with the Tacoma School district as a school psychologist. He died in 2009.
Pat is survived by her daughter, Renee, of Lakewood WA. In accordance with her wishes there will be no memorial service. Donations in her memory can be made to the Franciscan Hospice in care of Foundation Foundation, P.O. Box 1502, MS 10-02, Tacoma, WA 98401 or the Tacoma Humane Society, 2608 Center St., Tacoma, WA 98409.
