Capt. Albert Frederic Hasson10/22/35 Â- 11/29/03Born in France in 1935 to Haim and Cathrine Hasson, Capt. Fred Hasson was the sole surviving member of his immediate family, killed in the Holocaust.In 1950 he went to sea as a French Seaman, beginning a lifelong association with the Merchant Marine. He served in the Armies of the U.S., Israel, and Mexico. He saw action in Korea where he was awarded the Bronze Star, and served as a Paratrooper in the 1956 Israeli Sinai Campaign. In 1958 he went to sea again, eventually achieving the rank of Captain. Later he attended the University of Stockholm, earning credentials as a Marine Surveyor. He worked in that capacity for the National Cargo Bureau, C.S.A.V., S.E.R.P.A.C., finally heading his own Marine Services Company. Fluent in six languages, possessed of a keen intellect and rapier wit, a citizen of the world, Fred lived in Israel, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and France, as well as several U.S. cities before choosing Tacoma as his home.For all his varied interests and talents, Fred loved nothing more than being among friends, talking politics, and history; sometimes long into the night.Among the many who mourn the passing of an extraordinary man are Georgine Gillispie, his life companion, her family who treated him as their own; Elsa Jaffe of Vancouver B.C., and Dr. and Mrs. Javier Torres of San Francisco. Georgine wishes to thank the wonderful physicians and staffs at Valley Radiation Oncology Center, Rainier Oncology, Good Samaritan Hospital and their loving Hospice Program. You gave us the extra time we so wanted- LÂ'Chaim!Graveside services will be held at 2 PM, Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at Home of Peace Cemetery, Tacoma.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the U. S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, 100 Raoul Wallenberg Place, SW, Washington, D.C. 20024-2126, or to the charity of your choice.
