Albert "Al" Urban Rapp's Obituary
Albert U. Rapp, 91 passed away peacefully at his home on February 20th, 2015 in University Place, WA. Al was born in Fairfax, California on July 28, 1923 to Henry and Nellie (Searle) Rapp.
He is survived by his children, Sandra (Ray) Hackbarth, Clifford (Debra) Rapp, Virginia (Jeff Cochran) Coffman, stepson Joseph Kaplin. Brother Robert (Jean) Rapp. 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren along with many nieces, nephews and his very close friends Bob (Karen) Schwartz, Becky Clendenen, Bill (Megan) Murdock.
Al was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce of 29 years, his parents, brothers Harold and Thomas. Sisters Thelma Genheimer and Virginia Stratton
Al served in the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the U.S.S. Cape Gloucester in the Pacific fleet. Following his service he made his home in Tacoma, WA working as a foreman at Kaiser Aluminum. He later owned and operated Al Rapp Masonry Contractors building many homes and fireplaces in the area until his retirement in the 1980's.
Al had many interests including breeding and showing roses, primroses and rhododendrons. He was an active member of the Tacoma Elks Club and the Tacoma Primrose Society for many years. His interests also included breeding and raising Kio where he built many beautiful stone ponds for himself and others. After retiring he became a member of the Galloping Gerties Ford Model A Club where he was known as the go-to guy when anyone had problems or questions concerning their cars. He rebuilt, showed and judged cars at state and national meets where he won numerous awards.
Funeral services will be held at Mountain View Celebration of Life Center Aspen Chapel on Saturday, February 28, at 10 a.m. with graveside to follow. Visitation will be held from 1pm to 6pm on Friday, February 27 at Mountain View Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Franciscan Hospice House.
