I only today found out about Steve's illness and untimely passing and wanted to send my heartfelt condolences. I never met Steve, but we corresponded---vigorously!--via e-mail regarding our mutual passion for Madonna memorabilia. He bought things from me, we outbid each other on items and we recently had exchanged very lively e-mails about a classic "collecting coup gone awry." He was a terrifically funny correspondent, smart and unlike many fans of all types of things, he never had the need to say "I'm a fan, but I'm not one of THOSE CRAZY fans," because it was obvious from his demeanor that he was just a nice, regular person who enjoyed indulging in collecting things that gave him pleasure, and who took pleasure from the very act of collecting itself. Oh man - I've only just seen that Steven has passed away! I'm in total shock! I used to write to him regarding collecting Madonna items - he'd even set up a page for me on his website.
My sincerest condolences to his family - he was a lovely guy who had time for everyone and the generosity to match.

I was so saddened by the news of Steves passing on. I wanted to visit with him again before he left. Steve was a friend and a co-worker for many years at the city and I will miss his smile and his friendship. He always had my respects as a knowlegeable horticulturist and music officianado. I am in shock and numb. I was reading the last email you sent to me. If only the things had been much, much different. In the one year I knew you we exchanged over 700 emails and weekly phone calls. You quickly became one of my closest friends and confidants. I will miss your raspy laugh. Your smile. I will also miss you telling me not to bid on something because you had a double. I'm still in shock. The loss of your bodily presence will be felt around the world but all the smiles you always put on our faces still be seen globally for years to come. I'm going to miss seeing your emails as well as chatting with you on the phone. Whenever I get in a situation like that, I'll think of you & I'll smile.
