Emma T. Sloan

Emma True Sloan was born in Dillon, South Carolina to the late James Jeffrey and Almeda Camera Hayes on June 1, 1934. She gained her wings on June 7, 2022. Emma was raised in Washington DC. Having Christian teachings from parents who were firm believers in God’s word, Emma accepted Jesus Christ and joined Galbert AME Zion Church at an early age. She graduated from Cardoza High School in 1952 and Cortez Peters Business College. She later moved to Trenton, NJ where she was a member of the Wayne Avenue Baptist Church, where she was baptized. Emma met and married the love of her life, the late James Boyd Sloan, while living and working in Trento, NJ. After uniting as one, they became the proud and loving parents of three children: Sylvester, Regina and Catrina. Due to military obligations the family moved to Ft. Lewis Washington in 1970, where Emma retired from the Civil Service. Emma was a devoted and faithful member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. Emma loved her church, where she actively participated as a Sunday School and Vocational Bible School teacher, Usher Board, Senior Choir, Finance Committee and Women’s of Mt. Sinai. Emma was a member of the Masonic, where she was a Past Matron of Esther Chapter #27, Past Loyal Lady Ruler of Assembly #46 and Past Lustrustrous Commander of Yemen Temple #12. Emma’s philosophy and one of her many favorite sayings was, “If I can help somebody, then my living will not be in vain.” Emma enjoyed reading her Bible and singing around the house. Most importantly, Emma was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother and enjoyed every chance she got to spend time with her family. She was known to make others feel important and valued through her warm personality and gracious smile. Emma was preceded in death by her beloved husband James, son Sylvester, granddaughter Aaliyah, five brothers and four sisters. She leaves to mourn her death and celebrate her life two daughters: Regina of Corona, CA; Catrina (Colton) of Federal Way, WA; five grandchildren Dashawn (Pawan), Nicholas (Tara) of Sacramento, CA; Bianca (Stephen) of Emeryville, CA; Ebonee of Tacoma, WA and Colton James of Federal Way, WA; four great-grandchildren O’Ryan, Ishan and Zoey of Sacramento, CA and Isaiah of Emeryville, CA; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. We know Emma touched a lot of people lives, and you, her family and friends, are a tremendous testament to the life she lived.
